About / Tim Ketterer

Tim founded Float with Stephen in 2003. They met while studying for Masters Degrees in Interactive Multi Media at Bath Spa University.

Tim’s final Masters project won a leading national web design competition run by the Mando group and Computer Arts magazine.  His 2002 project ‘balloonsender’ can be seen as a forerunner to the social web applications we see today.

Tim contributes regularly to industry magazines, and lectures in Web Design at Bath Spa University.

What kind of student were you?

Scraped through school, and did a BA in Fine Art at Reading Uni. Fantastically unstructured course was perfect for me, allowing me space to expand my mind in all sorts of creative directions. Became fascinated by the concept of interaction and communication which led me, in 1997, into the area of a very young internet. I started my MA in Interactive Multi Media as a very different kind of student - having discovered something I was really interested in made me very driven and determined.

Still studying?

I guess in this industry you never stop learning – have to keep up with visual design, user interface design, code, digital strategies for business, marketing etc. You always need to know more.

Very aside from my day to day - last year I gained my RHS level 2 Horticulture certificate – really proud to have a certificate from the RHS!  I’m an incredibly rare breed that is a gardening web designer

Most effective way to learn?

Doing – I’m a doer and then a thinker, but rarely at the same time – I can’t multi task for toffee!

Biggest mistake web designers make?

To assume it’s all about the design.

Why do people in the education sector come to Float?

Our track record, experience and expertise

What would you most like to learn?

I’d love to have time to learn something new. Two children under five makes it impossible at the moment.

Favourite building?

My shed at the allotment.  It’s unpretentious, a little bit wonky, a complete mess inside, but it makes me smile.

What inspires you?

Wide open spaces and the countryside. I’m from Suffolk originally, it’s very flat there and the sky seems endless.
